Constable Brian Bertelsen of the OPP's Thessalon detachment and an as-yet-undetermined employee of the Sault Star have been credited with saving the life of a nine-day-old baby.

The following announcement was released this morning by East Algoma OPP:

********************* Police officer saves baby

(Iron Bridge, Ontario) - On Saturday November 27, 2004, Constable Brian Bertelsen of the East Algoma Thessalon OPP was on patrol in the Iron Bridge area and pulled into the Village General Store and Esso for fuel.

Constable Bertelsen was immediately advised by an employee of the store that there was a 9-day-old baby inside that was not breathing.

Constable Bertelsen entered the store and observed a lady holding a small baby in her arms.

The baby was handed to Constable Bertelsen and he immediately started CPR.

The baby was revived due to CPR and started to breath on its own.

The baby was transferred to Blind River Hospital via ambulance and has been kept for observation. `

Prior to the incident, it has been learned that the baby had been having difficulties breathing at home and the family was enroute to the hospital when the baby stopped breathing.

The family had stopped at the Village General Store and Esso to call 9-1-1.

While at the store a delivery person for the Sault Star had assisted and revived the baby once.

The Sault Star employee then left the store once the baby was breathing.

The baby then stopped breathing again when Constable Bertelsen arrived.

The East Algoma OPP would like to speak with the employee of the Sault Star who assisted with the revival of the baby.

If you are this person or know who this is, please contact the East Algoma OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
