After transforming Sault Ste. Marie's culinary scene with her masaladabbi of exotic Punjabi spices, Neeta Marwah is rolling up her sleeves to help build a better downtown.
Marwah is one of three new members joining the board of the Downtown Association, the group of Queen Street business people and property owners dedicated to physical improvements and economic development.
An election was to be held next Monday but city clerk Malcolm White has been advised by the organization that seven members are being acclaimed and no election will be necessary.
In addition to Marwah, the two other newcomers are Paul Mason from The Disability Assistance Group and Soo Dodgeball, and Elizabeth Filice.
They'll join existing directors Kristi Cistaro, Frank Gaccione, Angela Romano and Paul Scornaienchi.
The Downtown Association currently has a vacant chair.
Marwah started selling Indian food from her home in 2009, then from a P-patch storefront at 6 Village Crt. that's now home to Antico Ristoranté.
She opened Rasoi, her first sit-down dining room, one year ago at 518 Queen St. E. and is currently looking for larger premises.
"I want the Sault to grow, in a better way," the restaurateur tells SooToday.
"If you see other downtowns in different cities, they're running well. They're functional. Our downtown can be improved. But we all need to be on the same boat and work together toward it. I want it to be a lively downtown – that's the heart of the city."
The new board of directors holds office until Dec. 1, 2022.
