Judge Derek Holder, considered the founding father for children's mental health support in the Sault, will be honoured with a special award next month.

Algoma Child and Youth Services Foundation announced tonight that it will recognize Judge Holder at an awards dinner on November 12.

The event will honour the judge's efforts to challenge the stigma and promote awareness of children's mental health issues.

"During his 29 years as a Family Court judge for the District of Algoma, Judge Holder saw the devastating effects that mental health problems can have on our children and their families," the foundation said in a statement released today.

"For more than 35 years Judge Holder has been a caring and passionate advocate for youth with mental health problems.

"Considered to be the 'Founding Father' for support of Children's Mental Health in Algoma, Judge Derek Holder was instrumental in securing funds for the establishment of the original children's mental health center in 1979 as well as Algoma Child & Youth Services Foundation in 1994.

"Justice Holder sat on the founding board of the foundation for eight years and remains an honorary member.

"His passion, and visible support of children's mental health in our community continues today. Tickets are still available for the November 12 event, 6 p.m. at the Art Gallery of Algoma. For ticket information contact the ACYS Foundation Office at 949-5058, ext. 267.
