Hounds join in Bon Soo fun

Last night's RBC Insurance Skate with the Hounds event was one of many community events the Sault's Ontario Hockey Legue team will be involved with this year, says Gerry Liscumb Jr.

At last night's event, the team skated with its many fans and supporters, signing shirts, hats and even faces as part of the Bon Soo festivities.

Meanwhile, Liscumb, the team Public Relations and Communications Officer, talked about some of the community initiatives team members are involved in.

"Our 19-year-olds are doing Project Onside, a drug awareness program with the RCMP," he said. "They are going into the schools to talk to the kids about drug abuse."

As part of the program, the participating Greyhound players went to train at the Health Canada lab in Scarborough and spent some time riding with police officers in Toronto Police Service 52 Division.

Among the players trained and delivering Project Onside to Grades 6 and 7 classes in the Sault are Cody Thorton and Ryan Kitchen, shown with Marcie Neveau (front) and Lee Ann Carter.

The next installment of Project Onside takes place at Anna McCrea Public School.

"Our players getting out with the fans and with the people in the community," said Liscumb. "It's good to get out and interact with people."

The Greyhounds also plan to visit Kinross Correctional Facility soon.

They regularly drop in at Northern Heights Retirement Home and they practise hockey with different teams of young players.

"They're pretty busy all the time," said Liscumb.
