A horse in the Thessalon area that developed neurological signs and was subsequently euthanized has tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The horse had never left its home farm; indicating that mosquitoes in the area could be carrying the West Nile Virus and that birds in the area may be carrying the virus.

People should take precautions to limit exposure to mosquito bites for both themselves and their horses.

Additionally, horse owners should review the vaccination status of their horses and, if not current or unsure, consult with their veterinarian about the advisability of vaccinating at this time.
