The major crimes unit of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is investigating what's believed to be a homicide that occurred late Friday on Wellington Street East.
Around 11 p.m., police received word that two males were fighting in the downtown area.
Emergency medical services personnel transported one person believed to have been involved in the fight to Sault Area Hospital, where he died of his injuries.
At the time of writing (2 a.m. on Saturday), police were investigating one male person.
The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
This is the Sault's first homicide investigation of 2004.
We've had three other homicides during the past five years: in 2000, 2001 and 2003.
In the 2003 occurrence, 43-year-old Paul Rainone was fatally assaulted in the 600 block of Connaught Avenue.

Police have secured a section of driveway on Wellington Street East behind a pickup truck with plastic sheeting.
