Hockey team donates sticks, hockey gear to Christmas Cheer (3 photos)

The Property Masters Novice Major A hockey team put up another win Thursday night, donating more than a dozen brand new hockey sticks to this year’s Christmas Cheer campaign.

Coach Chris Miller says that members of the young squad also took it upon themselves to round up some used hockey gear to donate.

“I saw an online post that Christmas Cheer was looking for used hockey equipment and some used hockey sticks, so I figured there would be no better way this time of year to give back, especially to children who might need it,” Miller said.

The team was given a tour of the Christmas Cheer depot Thursday night after dropping off its donations to the campaign.

“My son is on the team, and he’s super excited, he thinks it’s great,” said manager Amy Tolin. “He knows that kids need toys, and that not everybody can afford equipment - it’s expensive - so he’s happy to be a part of giving back.”

As children looked through the various donations at the Christmas Cheer depot, Chris Barnes - who describes himself as one of the ‘elves’ working for Christmas Cheer - told the young hockey players about the need for the campaign locally.

“I think it’s fantastic,” Barnes told SooToday. “I think it’s really good for the kids to see that there are those who are not able to afford organized hockey, and in fact, some of them don’t even have a stick to play road hockey, and these guys are giving up sticks - like I said, they couldn’t come at a better time.”

Miller hopes that his players see that there are people out there who are less fortunate.

“I think the main thing I hope they take away from it is just to see how fortunate they are, and what else is out there on the other end - you could a little less fortunate, or times might be tough through the holiday season,” Miller said.

Friday is the last day that Christmas Cheer will accept any gently used donations.

Here’s a list of items that Christmas Cheer is still looking for:

• Toys for boys ages 10-18
• Gift certificates for teens, preferably from Station Mall
• Anything Paw Patrol
• Board games for kids ages 10 and up  
• Craft supplies  
• Pasta and pasta sauce

The Christmas Cheer campaign wraps up Dec. 19.
