Tractor trailer rollover with dangerous goods

TIERNAN TWP - Wawa OPP advise that Highway 17 is still closed from Wawa to Batchewana Bay as a result of a single motor vehicle collision involving a tractor trailer carrying explosives.

The collision occurred at approximately 4 a.m. this morning, 35 kilometres south of Wawa.

The tractor trailer was northbound on the top of a hill when it rolled into the east side ditch partially spilling the load of explosives.

At the present time, inclement weather is hindering clean up efforts with snow and freezing rain falling in the area.

Clean up crews will be attending the scene as soon as the highway is cleared and safe to travel.

11:15 a.m. update
 
TIERNON TWP - Wawa OPP advise that Highway 17 north is still closed from Wawa to Batchewana Bay as a result of a single motor vehicle collision involving a tractor trailer carrying explosives.
 
The collision occurred at approximately 4 a.m. this morning, 35 kilometres south of Wawa. 
 
The tractor trailer was northbound on the top of a hill when it rolled into the east side ditch partially spilling the load.
 
Visibility was poor at the time with heavy wet snow falling.
 
A 62-year-old female driver and a 64-year-old male passenger from Powassan were transported to Lady Dunn Hospital in Wawa with non-life threatening injuries.
 
Members from the Hemlo Emergency Response Team and OPP Explosive Disposal Unit are presently on scene as a result of the volatility of the load, which includes electronic detonators and powdered explosives.
 
The load originated in Coniston and was enroute to Richmont Mine in Dubreuilville and Hemlo Mine in Marathon.

SAULT STE. MARIE -  Wawa OPP advise that Highway 17 North is closed from Wawa to Batchewana Bay as a result of a single motor vehicle collision involving a tractor trailer carrying explosives.

The collision occurred at approximately 4 a.m. this morning, 35 kilometres south of Wawa.

The driver and passenger were transported to Lady Dunn Hospital in Wawa with non-life threatening injuries.

At the present time, the Highway will remain closed until the scene is assessed by an emergency response team specializing in explosives that is enroute to the scene from Hemlo and Coniston.
