The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA) has issued a flood outlook statement ahead of upcoming mild temperatures and the potential for some rain in the forecast.
The next five days locally are expected to bring high temperatures ranging from 6 C to 10 C and rainfall between 10 and 15 mm over the weekend.
Snowpack measurements reveal snow depths ranging from 65 to 95 cm, with an average water equivalent of 130 to 235 mm, which is higher than the long-term average for this time of year. That means an increased likelihood of above-normal runoff as the forecasted warm weather and rainfall combine.
"Moderate runoff is anticipated with the warm temperatures, which may lead to rising river, creek, and stream levels throughout the watershed," a Conservation Authority release also noted. "While current stream flows are at normal levels, localized flooding may occur in low-lying areas, and pooling of water is possible on roads. Flood control channels managed by the SSMRCA are currently operating at normal levels, though water levels in these areas are expected to rise."
The Conservation Authority is urging all residents and visitors to avoid flood control channels and all waterways as high water levels present significant hazards, and it is particularly important to keep children and pets at a safe distance from these areas.
This statement is in effect until March 18, 2025.
