Helping Hands still open for curbside service

Deemed essential service by public health, organization operating three days a week

Sault Ste. Marie Helping Hands, after receiving permission from Algoma Public Health (APH), is operating as an essential service during the current COVID-19 state of emergency.

Sault Ste. Marie Helping Hands, located on Gore Street, takes community donations of new or good quality second hand clothes and household items for those in need of them.

People are asked to pay what they can for those items to help the organization with its basic costs, such as rent, PUC and other bills.

“Helping Hands has reduced the number of volunteers during the duration of the lockdown and is offering curbside pickup for people who need clothes, hats, mittens, sleeping bags (and other such items). All the necessary precautions are being taken care of, including wearing masks, using hand sanitizers and maintaining social distancing. The organization will be open for three days per week instead of the regular five days (pre-lockdown),” a news release states.

“Sault Ste. Marie Helping Hands is proud to share with our members, donors, supporting agencies and community partners that we have successfully been approved as a charitable, not-for-profit organization by the federal government/Canada Revenue Agency.”

“Kudos to our community members, donors, board of directors and the Sault Ste. Marie community as a whole for your ongoing support of SSM Helping Hands over the past eight years. We could not have achieved this without you,” wrote Wendy Gutcher, Sault Ste. Marie Helping Hands president.

Sault Ste. Marie Helping Hands will be open for curbside service at its Gore Street location from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the state of emergency.

Volunteers will also be available to pick up donations from the homes of those interested in making donations of goods.

Pickups may be arranged by calling (705) 943-8363.
