'Hell is coming,' Sault councillors warned

Climate-change radicals plan to issue 'national declaration of rebellion' on Thursday

Seven local representatives of the global Extinction Rebellion movement appeared in the City Council chambers tonight in Sault Ste. Marie.

"Climate hell is coming, if emissions continue to spew," the activists sang in what they described as a "Valentine message" to councillors. "Let us act to stop it. Hop aboard our climate crew!"

Their choral Valentine was not recorded on the official video record of the meeting.

The group wasn't on the agenda for tonight's meeting but sang just before the scheduled start time of 4:30 p.m.

Extinction Rebellion Sault (XRSault) hopes to persuade City Council to declare a climate-change emergency.

Members include local Green Party candidate Kara Flannigan.

The climate-change activists attended previous City Council meetings on Jan. 28 and Feb. 4 and 5, sitting in the spectators' gallery and holding up signs.

The Canadian branch of the movement is planning on issuing a national declaration of rebellion on Valentine's Day, then "coordinating acts of civil disobedience from coast-to-coast to communicate the climate emergency we are facing."
