Original story: 5:30 p.m.

Heavy wind gusts have already caused power outages and fallen trees in the city this afternoon.

PUC and Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services attended Allens Side Road just north of Third Line earlier, where wind gusts caused a tree to fall on to a power line, which in turn caused a tree to catch fire.

Allens Side Road was closed temporarily as a result.

Meanwhile, on the east side of the city, those same winds also caused a tree to fall across McMeeken Street near Queen Elizabeth Public School Friday afternoon, prompting a response from fire, police and PUC.

The east end has also experienced power outages due to storm activity, affecting roughly 1500 customers.

Environment Canada is reporting winds out of the northwest at 50 km/hr, with wind gusts up to 80 km/hr.

The public is encouraged to call the PUC emergency line at (705)759-6555 to report any storm-related incidents.

Power outage notices sent out by PUC late this afternoon follow.
