NEWS RELEASE

ARTS COUNCIL OF ALGOMA

*************************
Upon reviewing the cultural dynamics of the region, Russell Raven and Isabelle Michaud recognized an opportunity for a community development project for the Arts Council of Algoma.

To address the needs for the non-profit organization and community, Raven and Michaud developed a plan to suit the identified needs and meet the requirements of the Arts Councils Mission and Mandate.

They looked at where the Arts Council was situated geographically and the local demographics. The Arts Council and city of Sault Ste Marie resides on traditional Batchewana First Nations land.

Furthermore, upward of 10,000 indigenous people of various nations live in the region.

Raven and Michaud developed a grant proposal for the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant which was made available to address this identified opportunity, in consultation with Dr. Rainey Gaywish at Algoma University and with the Board of Directors of the Arts Council. The Ontario Trillium Foundation awarded the grant in December and the project started Feb. 1.

Thanks to this SEED grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Arts Council will be able to tap into the artistic and cultural knowledge of a Community Art and Projects Coordinator, Dayna Rainville.

The project will be innovative being delivered from a traditional Anishinabek perspective. The project will provide learning and creative opportunities, and be about exhibiting and cataloguing the artwork of Indigenous and non-indigenous artists, creating a community working space for collaboration and innovation.

Rainville will be developing methods, structures, and practices under direction of the Arts Council for this twelve month project.
