NEWS RELEASES FROM CITY POLICE, ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE

********************* Members of the OPP Traffic and Marine Unit teamed up with the Sault Ste Marie City Police over the weekend to conduct the first of many RIDE checks.

Late Friday night and into Saturday morning, officers from the City Police and the OPP Traffic and Marine Unit set up RIDE checks throughout the city.

Members of the OPP issued three twelve hour drivers licence suspension and one man was charged with impaired driving.

Forty-year-old Gary Kindred of Sault Ste. Marie was checked at one of the spot checks and he was found to be drinking and driving.

He was returned to the police station and he failed the breathalyzer tests.

He will appear in court in January 2005 to answer to the charges.

********************* On the 26th of November from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. the Sault Ste Marie Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police conducted a joint RIDE program.

During that timeframe 500 vehicles were checked, 12 roadside tests were conducted, 4-12 hour suspensions were issued, and two persons were arrested for impaired driving related offences.

Both police agencies will continue to conduct the RIDE program throughout the rest of the festive season.
