The ATHENA Award honors women who strive toward the highest levels of professional accomplishment ... women who excel in their chosen field have devoted time and energy to their community in a meaningful ways and who also open paths so that others may follow.

ATHENA recipients must meet each of these three specific criteria.

They must:

- assist women in reaching their full potential

- demonstrate excellence, creativity and initiative in their business or profession

- provide valuable service by devoting time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community.

Profile

We salute Candy Mitchell owner/operator of Show Stoppers. Candy Mitchell and her husband relocated from Southern Ontario to Sault Ste. Marie in 1970 and raised two children.

In November 1986 she opened Show Stoppers, a 5,000-square-foot special events rental and retail store on Queen Street E.

The company began as a dream of Candy’s.

She now runs the show with 3 full-time and 4 part-time employees.

Candy Mitchell has always led the way in donating time and financial resources to significant community events including the Labatt’s Brier, Memorial Cup, Provincial Gymnastics Championship and the Provincial Winter Games plus she was the first fundraising co-ordinator of the Ontario Bushplane Heritage Museum.

Candy has served on the Board of Directors for the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Association. She has been an active member of the Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee, Business Development and the Awards Task Force.

She served as a member of the Pied Piper Co-operative Nursery School, Algoma Fall Festival, and the Sault College Business Advisory committee, Ontario Winter Carnival Bon Soo and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.

She currently serves as a member of the Board for Vision 20-20 and RAPIDSUCCESS.

Candy is a past recipient of a 1999 Northern Ontario Influential Women’s Award and the 1995 Chamber of Commerce Customer Service Award.

She has served as a judge for the Northern Ontario Business Awards and the Northern Ontario Influential Women Award.

She is a founding member of Woman Inc.

As you can see she is committed to many community activities and demonstrates a lot of energy to her community.

Candy is a tremendous resource in our community and we are proud to have her as a leading example! Congratulations Candy Mitchell.
