In what might be a good sign for Sault Ste. Marie's Jim Loney, a German archaeologist kidnapped last month in Iraq has been freed today.

"I am glad to be able to announce to you ... that Mrs. Susanne Osthoff is no longer in the hands of the kidnappers," German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced. "As of today, she is in the safety of the German Embassy in Baghdad."

Osthoff and her taxi driver were kidnapped the day before Loney and three fellow peace activists were abducted.

Vice President Dick Cheney is in Iraq for a surprise visit and he's saying that the parliamentary election there might open the way for an eventual withdrawal of American troops.

President Bush will make a televised address about Iraq at 9 p.m. tonight.
