Fulbright Scholar to discuss Sault Michigan history

Professor James Moody to speak at Historic Churches Program

Central United Methodist Church will host the second 2013 program of the Historic Churches of Sault Ste. Marie [Michigan] series on Monday, July 8, at 7 p.m.

Professor James Moody will speak about the History of Sault Ste. Marie.

Professor Moody has taught history and anthropology at Lake Superior State University since 1971, from which he earned a Distinguished Teaching Award in 2006.

He is a Fulbright Scholar who studied at the University of London, has a bachelor's degree from Greenville College in Illinois, and a master's degree in history from Michigan State University.

Before coming to LSSU, he taught for seven years at Greenville College.

His talk will trace the history of the Sault as a military frontier, a center for marine activity and lumbering, and the emergence of industrial development from 1890 to 1920.

Built in 1893, Central United Methodist Church is located at 111 East Spruce Street.

It is one of the five churches featured this year on Monday evenings during the summer.

The church will be open for viewing from 6:30 to 8 p.m. that evening.

Refreshments will be provided after the program.

Admission is free.

Donations to the Historic Churches series are greatly appreciated; they fund the printing of the annual brochure.

The Historic Churches series is a project of the Chippewa County Historical Society.

It was reorganized in 2000 from the earlier Pathways program by Arline Fitzmaurice and Sharon MacLaren.

2013 marks the Society’s 13th year of showcasing these landmark structures that have played significant roles in the cultural history of Sault Ste. Marie.

Residents and visitors to the Sault area are invited to attend these free programs.
