The city's Best for Kids Committee is asking City Council for a free community bus that would run between Bellevue Park and the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic site on Saturdays.

The proposed fun bus would operate May 1 to October 1.

It would stop at the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library, local museums and markets, John Rhodes Centre, downtown businesses, the hub trail and boardwalk.

The committee is proposing the new park-to-park route next year to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday.

Committee member Dana Peterson said that the service would also be useful to seniors and all citizens, and will promote physical fitness and tourism.

The Best for Kids Committee argues that every dollar invested in early childhood growth and development provides a return up to $17.

The committee previously successfully pushed for a summer recreation program at Etienne Brule/ Greco Pool, which has operated since 2012.

City Council was not expected to deal with the request at tonight's meeting.

"You've certainly given us a lot to think about," said Mayor Christian Provenzano.
