Four more schools have jumped on board Algoma District School Board's Balanced School Day initiative.

Joining the four schools continuing the program are Grand View Public School and William Merrifield Academy in Sault Ste. Marie, Thessalon Public School in Thessalon and Central Avenue Public School in Elliot Lake.

As previously reported by SooToday.com, the school board's balanced school day initiative divides the school day into into three 100-minute instructional blocks with two 50-minute nutritional breaks between.

The four Algoma District School Board schools that ran the program last year were Greenwood, Parkland, Pinewood and River View Public Schools.

Principals of two of those schools were at a board meeting last night to talk about Ontario Ministry of Education awards of excellence for which their schools have been nominated.

Lucia Reece, River View Public School principal said that the Balanced School Day contributed significantly to the success of her students and staff last year.

Specifically, Reece said that the schedule allowed for much more access to community professionals, partners and resource people.

"People were much more willing to come into the school and talk with our teachers because it wasn't their lunch time," she said.
