Four local high school students – Owen Appleton, Taylor Elliott, Rylee Ann Mancuso, and Mackenzie Wood-Salomon –  boast being the inaugural recipients of Sault College’s new Specialist High Skills Major Award! The award, which was presented to students graduating from a Specialist High Skills Major who are continuing in that area of study, gave the recipients $1,000 towards their tuition for the upcoming academic year!

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) lets students focus on a career path that matches their skills and interests while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). “Through this Specialist High Skills Major Award, Sault College saw an amazing opportunity to provide additional incentive to those students transitioning from SHSM to a related area of study at the College,” said Tanya Running, manager strategic enrolment, Sault College.

“These students have found their passions through SHSM and we are honoured to be able to support them and celebrate their hard work and perseverance. We are tremendously excited for these students to continue their studies here in the fall and we look forward to continuing to offer this award into the future,” she added.

To be eligible for the award, students must have been graduating from high school in June 2019, have applied and been accepted to Sault College, have completed the SHSM and continuing that path into a Sault College program, include a letter of recommendation, and submit a one-page essay outlining their high school experience, why SHSM was chosen and how that has prepared them for College.

Mackenzie Wood-Salomon, a recipient of the Specialist High Skills Major Award and graduate of Superior Heights, participated in the Health and Wellness SHSM. She is continuing her studies in Sault College’s Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing. “This award is helping me to follow my childhood dream. I look forward to what the future holds and to helping out our community after completing this program.”

“This means so much to me because I get to see my hard work paying off. I am honoured to be able to represent my high school and the SHSM. I am proud to be recognized through this award,” said Taylor Elliott, another recipient of the award and graduate of Korah Collegiate. She participated in the Sport SHSM and will be continuing her studies in the Police Foundations program.

Congratulations to the first four recipients of the Specialist High Skills Major Award! We can’t wait to have you at the College!
