Four arrested in Elliot Lake drug bust

ELLIOT LAKE – On Dec. 6, 2016, at around 6:49 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended an apartment on Hillside Drive North in Elliot Lake to execute a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) warrant.

Members from the Community Drug Action Team (CDAT), East Algoma Crime Unit, Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB) - Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU), Emergency Response Team (ERT), the Canine Unit, and uniform members were involved with the investigation.     

As a result of the warrant being executed, police found numerous prescription pills, illegal drugs, and drug related paraphernalia. Approximately 23 grams of Crack Cocaine, 30 Oxycodone pills, four grams of Cannabis Marijuana, and $4,000 in cash was seized.

The following people were charged:

Joseph Newton, 57 years of age, of Elliot Lake, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA
  • Fail to Comply with conditions of Undertaking, contrary to section 145(5.1) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Possession of a Schedule II substance – Cannabis Marijuana – Under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000 – in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC

Race Baker, 29 years of age, of Sudbury, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Traffick in Schedule I substance – Cocaine, contrary to section 5(1) of the CDSA
  • Disobeying Order of Court, contrary to section 127 of the CC
  • Possession of a Schedule II substance - Cannabis Marijuana – Under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000 – in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC
  • Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, contrary to section 91(2) of the CC

Christiane Denis, 31 years of age, of Elliot Lake, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA

Crystal Grant, 24 years of Capreol, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Fail to Comply with conditions of Undertaking, contrary to section 145(5.1) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA

The accused persons appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on Dec. 7, 2016.
