Five new fires in the northeast region

Five new fires have been confirmed in the Northeast region this afternoon, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services stated in a release issued today.

  • Sudbury 48 is under control at 0.1 of a hectare. This fire is located northwest of Rushbrook Provincial Park.
  • Sudbury 49 is under control at 0.1 of a hectare. The fire is located near Round Lake.
  • Kirkland 8 is now out at 0.1 of a hectare. This fire was located south of Boston Creek.
  • North Bay 13 is 0.2 of a hectare and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located within Mattawa River Provincial Park.
  • Sudbury 50 is 0.1 of a hectare and not under control at the time of this update. This fire is located near Lake Panache.

Currently, there are 20 active fires across the Northeast region, of these eight are not under control and twelve are under control.

  • Cochrane 9 is 7.5 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located north of Lake Abitibi.
  • Cochrane 12 is 82 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. This fire is located near Tweed Lake.
  • Cochrane 13 is 301 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located northwest of Lawagamau Lake.
  • Sudbury 42 is 56 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. This fire is located northwest of Wanapitei Provincial Park.

Fires of Note:

  • Kirkland Lake 6 is 100 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located northeast of Browning Lake and west of Holmes Lake. Seven crews, three overhead staff and three helicopters are committed to this fire. Helicopter bucketing is supporting ground crews’ suppression efforts. Crews are making good progress with favourable weather conditions and less fire activity.
  • Cochrane 15 is 140 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located 50km east of Cochrane. There are currently three fire crews, one overhead staff, two helicopters and  heavy equipment assigned to this fire. Bucketing operations are supporting ground crew suppression efforts. Less fire activity was observed on June 20 due to favourable weather conditions.

The fire hazard in the central portion of the region ranges high to extreme, while areas in the southern and northern sections of the region are seeing mostly a moderate to high hazard today.
