The first saltie of the 2002 shipping season, the Chios Pride, cleared the Soo locks at 7 a.m. this morning.

The Chios Pride actually arrived last night but was given permission to dock at the locks overnight because of heavy river ice, www.BoatNerd.com reported.

There's so much ice that the MacArthur lock is being used today solely to move ice, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff told SooToday.com.

Vessels entering the Poe lock are pushing large amounts of river ice in front of them.
