Fire strikes Elgin apartment building (3 photos)

The fire originated with a cigarette, say fire officials

An errant cigarette sparked a fire at an Elgin Street six-plex overnight, say fire officials.

Deputy Fire Chief Paul Milosevich tells SooToday a cigarette fell between the cushions of a couch in one of the units, causing the fire.

No one was injured in the fire, but all six units were evacuated

Milosevich said the building has been ventilated and tenants in all but the unit where the fire originated have been able to return to their homes.

One person remains displaced by the fire. Red Cross was called in to assist with alternate living arrangements.

Milosevich said it is important to make sure that cigarettes are properly disposed of.
