In the early morning hours of November 20, 2012, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services (SSMFS) personnel responded to a residential structure fire in the 500 block of Korah Road.

Upon arrival, SSMFS encountered the northern exterior of the home totally engulfed in flames.

Thirteen responding firefighters brought the fire under control in less than 30 minutes.

An awake family member was alerted by the smell of smoke and soon after warned other family members who immediately called 9-1-1.

All exited the home to safety.

Working smoke alarms located throughout the home eventually sounded.

Fire Services’ investigation determined the cause to be an energized extension cord that originated from the attached garage.

There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.

SSMFS would like to remind residents that extension cords are not to be used as permanent wiring and only to use electrical products that are certified and approved for use in Canada.
