Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services was called to the scene of a fire in the 300 block of Cathcart Street on Sunday morning.
Platoon Chief Stan Martynuck said that at 7:06 a.m. the fire department received two 911 calls and upon arriving on scene observed flames coming from the northeast corner of a porch attached to a two-and-a-half story house.
Occupants were already evacuated by the time firefighters were on scene and there were no injuries in the incident.
Martynuck said smoke penetrated the basement of the home but did not get into any other level.
Sault Ste. Marie Police Services also attended the scene.
"The cause is indefinite. At this point it is not considered suspicious but it is still under investigation," said Martynuck.
The home owners said that at the time of the incident one person was in the home sleeping but were awoken by a knock on the door from a neighbour who had smelled the burning wood before rushing out of their home and seeing the porch in flames.
The incident occurred in the same part of town - just 200 meters away - from where a suspicious fire occurred last weekend.
Police reported an arrest in relation to that incident. Police were unavailable for comment on Sunday.
