SUDBURY — When he arrived at the Killarney Mountain Lodge not long after 3 a.m. this morning, Killarney Fire Chief Gary Chappel said the building was fully engulfed in flames.
“The fire didn’t hit the main building, just a new building,” Chappel said. “It’s probably one of the biggest fires ever to hit Killarney — it was just massive.”
The section that burned is apparently housed new guest rooms constructed as part of the recently completed $18-million renovation.
He said the 12-volunteer firefighters with the Killarney Fire Department did an excellent job of containing the huge fire — which burned so hot it consumed the new welcome sign on the recently renovated vacation spot. The firefighters worked hard, Chappel said, to keep the fire contained to the property and prevent it from spreading to nearby houses, boats in the marina and Pitfield’s General Store, which is near the lodge.
No one was injured in the fire, Chappel said, and it doesn’t appear there were any casualties.
He did hear what sounded like a gas tank “popping” as firefighters battled the fire.
Chappel said he was advised by the Ontario Provincial Police to call in the Ontario Fire Marshall to investigate the cause of the blaze, something the chief said he will be doing today.
Firefighters remain on the scene dousing the remains of the building and putting out hotspots.
