Beginning at noon tomorrow, a fire ban will be in effect for the Township of Hilton and the Village of Hilton Beach on St. Joseph Island.

All previously issued burning permits are suspended and no new permits will be issued until further notice.

The fire ban prohibits all open air burning, including campfires, cooking fires, burning of brush or debris, and use of outdoor fire grates, fireplaces and fire pit. However, use of portable gas or propane cooking appliances, or outdoor appliances with a mechanical shutoff is allowed.

Anyone who contravenes the fire ban is liable to a fine and whatever costs are associated with extinguishing the fire.
