Faulted underground cable alarms Huron Street residents

Faulted underground cable is blamed

Fire Services, PUC and city public works employees rushed to Sault Ste. Marie's west end early Saturday evening after receiving multiple calls about two explosion-like noises and smoke pouring from a manhole.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. and fire trucks were seen at the Huron/Cathcart and Huron/St. Andrews intersections.

One neighbour tells SooToday smoke was rising 30 feet in the air.

PUC reported that power was cut to about 400 customers in the Jamestown area, and the cause was found to be faulted underground cable.

Fire trucks left the scene around 7:15 p.m. while PUC crews continued to work there.

SooToday will report any further information received about this incident.
