One person is dead after a multi-vehicle accident on Trunk Road today that sent four others to hospital.

The accident was not the cause of power outages that have affected a large portion of the City including Station Mall this afternoon, police tell SooToday.com.

However, the power problems did create communications problems for police.

The following are two news releases issued by City Police:

*************************** At approximately 12:02 p.m. this afternoon the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service was called to investigate a multi- vehicle collision on Trunk Road near the East End Husky Gas Station.

Emergency Services attended at the location.

One male person was transported to hospital by ambulance with serious injuries and four others were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

It has now been learned that one person has died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.

No names and or other details will be released until the next of kin have been notified.

The investigation is continuing and the public’s assistance is requested in avoiding the accident scene.

The road will remain closed until further notice.

**************************** EARLIER NEWS RELEASE

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service is presently investigating a serious motor vehicle accident on Trunk Road near the Husky Gas Station.

As a result Trunk Road will be closed until further notice.

People traveling east or west are requested to use one of two alternate routes.

The two routes are:

1. Eastbound traffic should use Queen Street East to northbound Fournier Road then east on Trunk Road. 2. Travellers coming from the east into Sault Ste Marie are requested to exit Trunk Road at Tecumseh, just west of Fournier Road, and then travel west along Frontenac Street (located just north of the C.N. railway tracks) or take Fournier Rpad south to westbound Queen Street East.

The City Police are requesting that the public avoid the area until further notice.

It is expected that the road will be closed until early evening.

The public will be notified as soon as the road is re-opened.
