Video rental stores, already a rarity in this new era of online movie viewing, just got rarer.

Family Video has ceased operating its sole Sault Ste. Marie location at 480 Pim Street.

"It was one of the larger (Family Video) stores in Canada," said Mike Cavannaugh, Family Video manager, speaking to SooToday Tuesday.

Sunday marked the store's last day of business at the Pim Street location.

Family Video's lease at that location expired in February and the company had been seeking terms for a new lease.

A soft sale of store merchandise had already been held, and the store's contents were being removed Tuesday.

The contents were being shipped off to other Family Video locations in Canada and the U.S., Cavannaugh said.

Cavannuagh said "it remains to be seen" if Family Video will relocate to another Sault location.

There are six other Family Video locations in Canada, all of them in southern Ontario.

There is one Family Video outlet in Sault, Michigan.

Family Video's head office is located in Glenview, Illinois.

The company has over 700 locations, most of them in the U.S. Midwest.
