Firefighters found an elderly lady in the backyard this afternoon when they arrived to put down a fire in her house at 279 Bruce Street.
The fire, near the Bell World store at Grosvenor, caused extensive damage to the back of the house, Platoon Chief Bruce Lash said.
The woman was the sole occupant at the time of the 2 p.m.
Firefighters pointed her to a nearby ambulance but she did not wish to be taken to be checked at hospital and her son arrived shortly afterward.
The woman is currently with friends.
Cause was not immediately known.
