Evita the Musical presented at Superior Heights

Superior Heights will present its first-ever school musical this May: Evita, by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

Students from the Algoma District School Board will act, sing and dance their way through the iconic 1978 musical about Argentine political leader Eva Peron.

Directed by Anthony Aceti and music directed by Sharon Dick, this show will feature the talents of students from Grades 7 to 12, including students in the Intermediate Program at Superior Heights, and the Superior Heights Concert Band.

Cheyenne McLean will lead the cast as Evita, Noah Morden as Che (The Narrator), Adam Marcil as President Juan Peron, Abby Barsanti as Peron’s Mistress and Nick Speer as Agustin Magaldi, the nightclub singer.

Best known for the popular song Don’t Cry for Me Argentina, Evita tells a rags-to-riches story of Eva Peron, the actress-turned-politician’s wife.

The musical covers key moments in Evita’s life, from her early years living in poverty to her rise into fame, wealth and power to her charitable work and foreign press tours to her ambivalent legacy and premature death.

Narrated by a cynical outsider, Che, a clash emerges between what Evita would have us believe and what is really the case.

The musical raises questions about media, national identity, celebrity and politics: “Who are our heroes and why do we admire them?”

Evita is a sung-through musical - all the dialogue is sung in an eclectic range of styles, including tango, ballad, pop, choral, Latin, rock, among others.

Highlights include Don’t Cry for Me Argentina, Another Suitcase Another Hall, Buenos Aires, The Art of the Possible, and Rainbow Tour.

Tickets are on sale at the Kiwanis Community Theatre Centre box office in Station Mall ($20 for adults, $15 for seniors and students, with group rates available) for the performances on Thursday, May 23, Friday, May 24 and Saturday, May 25.

On Wednesday, May 22, an open dress rehearsal will be held as a charity night for ARCH with all proceeds donated at the door (no advance tickets) to support ARCH.

Doors open at 6:30 each night with the show beginning at 7p.m.
