EMS treat woman for burns after Peoples Road fire (3 photos)

The fire was one of two emergency calls made within a 20-minute period

Two 911 calls for separate incidents were made this afternoon, one of which resulted in fire-related injuries, says a representative of the Sault Fire Services.

Platoon chief Stan Martyuck said the first call was made by a woman reporting a fire had started in the kitchen of her second floor apartment in the 1000-block of Peoples Road at 12:53 p.m.

The woman indicated during the call that she had sustained injuries in the fire.

As a result, four fire trucks, an ambulance and EMS supervisor truck were dispatched to the scene.

The fire appeared to be out when firefighters from the first unit arrived on scene, and an effort was made to begin patient care to the injured woman prior to EMS arrival.

The woman was treated for burns at the scene and taken by ambulance to Sault Area Hospital.

“We are unaware of [the extent of] injuries at this time. She was conscious,” said Martynuck.

The crew of the second pumper began thermal imaging of the scene, while the third crew on scene began ventilation of the apartment unit.

A fourth crew attended the scene, but was soon waived off at about the same time a second 911 call came in — at 1:14 p.m. — from the 300-block of Dryden Avenue.

In that call, a woman had locked herself out of the house with a pot on the stove and her dog still inside the home.

The fourth crew from the previous fire was able to assist the woman in getting back into her house before the situation escalated.

Two units from the Peoples Road fire were redirected to Dryden Avenue, but were soon called back to station.

Martynuck said the woman did the right thing by calling 911 in that situation.

“She said the stove was on, it becomes an emergency situation. If somebody is locked out of their house and there is no emergency, we direct them to locksmiths,” said Martynuck.
