Small plane crashes near St. Kateri (4 photos)

Call came in around 2 p.m.

A pilot walked away unscathed after crashing his plane near St. Kateri Outdoor Learning Centre Monday afternoon.

A SooToday reader captured the above photos shortly after the plane went down in the area of Goulais Avenue. Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to a report of a plane crash shortly before 2 p.m. Firefighters and members of Sault Ste. Marie Police Service attended the scene.

Pilot Dennis Weatherall, who is from Saskatchewan, told SooToday that he had just purchased the Polish-made PZL-104 Wilga that crashed into a wooded area nearby the outdoor learning centre.

"I feel just fine," said Weatherall, who walked away from the wreckage with a couple small scratches on one of his hands. "It was a low-speed landing."

SooToday will post additional information as it becomes available.
