Dr. Roberta Bondar to attend opening of local training centre

SAULT STE MARIE, Ont - The 155 Air Cadet Sqn. are pleased to announce their Aircraft Maintenance Project which is a partnership with the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre and the 155. This joint venture is a start to the Dr Roberta Bondar Air Cadet Training Program with the Aircraft Maintenance as the first phase.

Captain Roy Harten, Unit Public Affairs Officer, 155 Borden Gray Air Cadet Sqn. noted “as far as we know this is a unique Air Cadet optional training program that will be ongoing during the training year for the Air Cadets and possibly the first of its kind in Ontario and Canada.

This partnership will give Air Cadets the opportunity to learn from qualified Aircraft Maintenance Technicians on how to service aircraft, engines and conduct pre-flight check lists with hands on training on real static aircraft and displays.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre on Friday May 13, 2016 at 4 p.m.

Special guests will include: 

• Dr. Roberta Bondar, Honorary Patron of the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre
• Colonel Yve Thomson, CD Commander 16 Wing at CFB Borden
• Chief Warrant Officer Hank Etheridge, CD, 16 Wing CWO
• Susan Myers , City Councillor Ward 2, representing Mayor Provenzano
• Craig Hawkins, Past Chair Ontario Provincial Committee Air Cadet League of Canada.

On Sat May 14th the 155 Air Cadets will be having their 74th Annual Review at the Pine Street Armoury at 10:00 hours. Col Thomson will be the Reviewing Officer. The Annual Review is an opportunity for the cadets to show what they have learned this past training year. The combined 155 Air and 2310 Army Cadet Pipe and Drum Band will be performing their award winning performance after winning first place at the Northern Ontario Area Cadet Band Drill Competition in North Bay Ontario. This event is also open to the public and guest should arrive by 09:30 hours.

With some 58,000 cadets, the Canadian Cadet Organization (CCO) - which is a partnership between the DND/CF and the Navy League of Canada, the Army Cadet League of Canada and the Air Cadet League of Canada, and local communities - is one of the most successful youth organizations in the country while offering unique opportunities.  Of the nearly 17,000 cadets in Ontario, there are approximately 2,150 Sea Cadets, 6,500 Army Cadets, and 8,300 Air Cadets.

The aim of the Cadet Program is to develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, promote physical fitness and stimulate the interest of youth in sea, land and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces. With the Air Cadet Program focusing on civilian as well as military aviation, flight, design and maintenance.
