The late Dr. Hui Lee has been recognized with another national award.

The popular Group Health Centre specialist was one of four Canadian physicians recognized recently with this year's William Osler Award, presented by the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine.

The award recognizes excellence in general internal medicine.

It was presented to Lee's wife Dr. Anne Lee and Hui's parents at the society's annual scientific meeting in Quebec City.

Two years ago, Lee was recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario with that group's 2002 Council Award, recognizing physicians who come closest to meeting society's vision of an 'ideal' physician.

Dr. Lee collapsed and later died on March 26 after competing with the Soo Masters Polar Bears Swim Team at the provincial masters championships in Toronto. background

The late Dr. Hui Lee was honoured with a 2004 William Osler Award at the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine's (CSIM) Annual Scientific Meeting held in Quebec from June 2 to 6.

The CSIM Osler Award is presented annually to an individual(s) demonstrating excellence in achievement in the field of General Internal Medicine (GIM), either in clinical practice, research, medical education or specialty development.

This year, four awards were presented to; Dr. Paul Clavette, Edmunston; Dr. Samuel Benaroya, Montreal; Dr. Barry Kassen Vancouver and Dr. Hui Lee, Sault Ste. Marie - posthumous.

Dr Hector Baillie, who traditionally presents the Osler to the winners, introduced Dr. Anne Lee (family physician with the Algoma District Medical Group (ADMG) and Dr. Hui Lee's parents (David and Elizabeth Lee) who accepted the award.

According to Shelley Murdock with the CSIM, some of the comments regarding Dr Hui Lee have been:

"Dr. Lee certainly exemplified the best in medicine in the tradition of Sir William Osler. He was an excellent clinician, a wonderful colleague, and a dynamic researcher." "The innovation and leadership he has shown in his community are remarkable. Hui clearly sets an admirable standard for the community General Internist." "Dr. Lee's knowledge of medicine was encyclopaedic and he always knew the latest in the medical literature.

"An avid proponent of evidence-based medicine, he always evaluated the literature critically, with a view to distilling and applying the best available evidence.

"Where evidence was lacking, he proposed research studies to answer important clinical questions, and was the primary investigator in many trials."

"As a clinician Dr. Lee was kind and compassionate.

"For such a great man, he had a rare humility, and was always more interested in bringing out the best in others rather than seeking credit or attention."

Dr. Lee who was a Internist with the ADMG at the Group Health Centre was a member of the CSIM Executive and Council until his untimely death on March 26, 2004.

As described by historian Michael Bliss "Sir William Osler (1814-1919) was an ideal physician: a master of the science and art of medicine a lover of humanity, and totally devoted to healing as a sacred calling."

Sir William Osler was a professor at McGill University, Professor of Medicine at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, and Regius Chair of Medicine at Oxford University, England, in a few of his achievements.
