Dr. Beverley Bain wants to teach you about gendered racism

The Algoma University Diversity and Equity Committee will be hosting the next session of its popular Speaker Series this Wednesday.  The goal of the series is to promote a safe and inclusive campus and community.

January’s keynote public lecture will be delivered by Dr. Beverley Bain, discussing “Gendered Racism and the White Neoliberal University and the Relationship of a University to a Community.” Dr. Bain teaches in Women and Gender Studies in the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Toronto in Mississauga. She currently lectures and researches in the area of Black and Caribbean diasporic organizing and sexualities, gendered police violence, and feminist critical pedagogies.

The Diversity and Equity Speaker Series aims to provide a space to reflect and gain practical tools needed to advance equity and inclusion on campus and within the wider community by promoting cultural competency and critical thinking. Each speaker in the series comes from a diverse social background and is an expert in providing diversity and equity training.

The public is welcome to attend this Wednesday, Jan. 23 from 7 - 9 p.m. in the Doc Brown Lounge (EW205); admission is free.

Dr. Bain will also be presenting a lecture to Algoma University students, staff, and faculty earlier the same day.
