Attempted theft of motor vehicle

Just before 8 a.m. on the 5th of December 2016, officers with the Patrol Services Division of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service attended a downtown area and arrested 35-year-old Shawn Mearow of no fixed address regarding the attempted theft of a motor vehicle. The victims had started their motor vehicle and left it running in order to warm it prior to driving. While the vehicle was unattended, the accused (allegedly) entered the driver’s side and attempted to drive the vehicle away.

The accused was interrupted by the victims and he attempted to flee the scene. The accused was held at the scene by a citizen and police were contacted. Officers quickly responded and placed Mr. Mearow in custody. Upon his arrest, Mr. Mearow (allegedly) struggled with the officers and would not comply with their commands. Officers searched the accused and found that he was in possession of a flick knife that was capable of being opened with centrifugal force and a small amount of a substance believed to be methamphetamine.

As a result, Shawn Mearow has been charged with one count of theft of a motor vehicle, one count of resisting arrest, one count of possession of a prohibited weapon, and one count of possession of a controlled substance.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind the public to keep a close eye on running vehicles. Valuables should not be left inside of an unattended vehicle. If you know that you are going to be away from your vehicle, your keys should be kept with you.
