Doctors O'Brien and Castellani appointed to APH board

Algoma Public Health (APH) welcomed two new board members to the Board of Health at its meeting on May 25.

Dr. Lucas Castellani, M.D. and Dr. Heather O’Brien, M.D. were appointed by Sault Ste. Marie City Council on May 16, 2016 to serve on the board until the end of 2016.

“We welcome both Dr. Castellani and Dr. O’Brien to our board and look forward to the professional expertise and knowledge that they will bring to the Board of Health,” says Lee Mason, Chair, Board of Health. 

APH is a public health agency committed to improving health and reducing social inequities in health through evidence-informed practice.

APH has two hundred employees with a main office in Sault Ste. Marie and three offices in the Algoma district: Blind River, Elliot Lake and Wawa.

About Dr. Castellani

Dr. Lucas Castellani was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie. He went to medical school at the University of Queensland, Australia and completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Toronto.

He is currently completing his subspecialty training in Infectious Diseases at the University of Toronto. Lucas has long had an interest in the improvement of public health and healthy equality.

He looks forward to bringing his passion and experiences to the board as they strive to improve the health of Algoma.

About Dr. O’Brien

Dr. O’Brien received her medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1986 and went on to complete her Internship and Residency in Anesthesia at the University of Ottawa.

After further training in Critical Care, she worked at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and was an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa, involved in the training of residents and medical students.

She obtained a Master’s in Education Degree from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education/ University of Toronto in 2002 and was a locum in Sault Ste. Marie for many years before moving here to take up full-time practice, a faculty appointment at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, and leadership of the Anesthesia Department in 2006. 

In the past ten years she has held executive level positions of medical leadership at the Sault Area Hospital in the Medical Staff Association and in Senior Management.  She is currently in her 5th year of service to SAH as Chief of Staff.
