On Tuesday, July 1, 2014 Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to a 911 call in the 600 Block of Wellington Street West.

Upon arrival, fire crews witnessed smoke venting from second floor windows and the eaves of the structure.

Second floor occupants were alerted to the fire by the units smoke alarm and used the fire escape to exit the building.

The remaining occupants were alerted and also left the building unharmed.

Fire crews extinguished the fire and ventilated the structure.

The fire caused minor thermal damage and light smoke damage throughout.

Investigation of the fire revealed it was caused by an improperly discarded cigarette.

“This fire could have been avoided if a proper ashtray was used to discard the cigarette”,  stated Inspector Rocco Celetti. “In this case, the occupants were fortunate to be alerted to the fire by a working smoke alarm.”

Fire Services would like to remind the public that smoking articles need to be thoroughly extinguished and discarded in appropriate containers.
