Officials from the Sault's F.J. Davey Home took the veils off the design for their new $44.4 million building, set for completion in March, 2004.

The plans, revealed to City Council Monday night by architect Robert Davies of Toronto-based Montgomery Sisam Associates, show a 233,000-square-foot structure with eight street-like wings converging on a central "village square."

City buses will be able to pull right up to the front doors. To see the architect's 3-D rendering of the front with the lobby cut away, click here.

Tenders closed Monday on first phase

Tenders on phase one of the project closed Monday and will be reviewed this week, councillors were told. Tenders for the second phase will be called in July, with closure at the end of August.

The project is currently on budget and on schedule, and F.J. Davey Home officials intend to keep it that way, Council was told.

Largest currently being built in Ontario

The Davey Home is the largest long-term care facility currently being built by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, which prefers to keep such facilities in the 150-200 bed range.

The existing F.J. Davey building doesn't meet ministry standards for long-term care and will no longer be used for that purpose.

Truth, justice, and darned pretty colour pictures!
