CUPE hasn't offered to return to the table, CLA head insists

John Policicchio, chief executive officer of Community Living Algoma (CLA), is denying statements that Local 1880 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees has offered to return to the bargaining table.

"It has been reported that CUPE offered through the provincial mediator to meet again with the employer," Policicchio said in a written statement.

"The fact is, no such request has been made of the employer to return to the table either though direct contact by the union or by the provincial mediator," he said/

Community Living Algoma (CLA) says its support plan is in place and management remains confident that contingency arrangements are continuing to meet the basic daily needs of individuals under the care of the agency.

Chief Executive Officer John Policicchio says, "We continue to focus our time and energies on provision of care for individuals.

"Our management staff is working responsibly and remains committed to meeting needs and assuring safety."

CLA points out that contingency plans are handling the day-to-day support needs.

CEO Policicchio adds, "With or without a labour disruption, you plan for everything. Whether it's medical, financial, dietary or personal needs, our plan to manage is in place."

Responding to some media reports, CLA emphasizes that without a contract or Essential Services Agreement, the CLA Board was faced with no option but the current course of action.

"Our responsibility is to be certain of continuity of support under these circumstances and that was jeopardized by the union rejection of the tentative settlement reached at mediation," says Policicchio.

It has been reported that CUPE offered through the provincial mediator to meet again with the employer.

The fact is, no such request has been made of the employer to return to the table either though direct contact by the union or by the provincial mediator.
