Cross-country ski club gets lit

The Government of Canada is investing $22,374 to help the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club, in partnership with the local Kinsmen Club and Conservation Authority, improve lighting on a two-kilometre ski trail - the only lit ski trail available for evening use - as well as a parking lot and outdoor recreation area.

The funding will also cover the installation of a new speaker system, enabling event organizers to better communicate with participants and spectators during outdoor activities.

Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, announced the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program funding today on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor.

The Hiawatha Highlands trail system is open to the public year round and is located 11 kilometres from downtown Sault Ste. Marie. In addition to skiing and snowshoeing, it is also used for biking, hiking, running and orienteering.

The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150) funding, delivered in Northern Ontario through FedNor, is part of the Government of Canada’s coordinated approach to mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation. These investments across Canada will help create jobs, boost economic activity, strengthen communities, and celebrate Canada’s rich heritage and history.
FedNor is delivering this program in Northern Ontario with an allocation of $10.4 million over two years, ending Mar. 31, 2018.
