Horwath Fly-by of Sault Ste. Marie Leaves Local NDP Candidate Driving to Sudbury

Following the Northern Leaders Debate, Kathleen Wynne came to Sault Ste. Marie and later travelled to Sudbury.

Andrea Horwath chose instead to fly-by the Sault and headed directly to Sudbury, leaving the local NDP candidate driving hours just to see her party leader.

“Kathleen Wynne cares about Sault Ste. Marie and Northern Ontario and as a leader she has demonstrated her commitment by visiting our community numerous times to hear first hand from residents about the issues that matter to them,” said David Orazietti, Liberal candidate.

“In skipping the Northern Leaders debate, Tim Hudak showed us he is not interested in Northern Ontario, and in ignoring Sault Ste. Marie, Andrea Horwath showed us she is not interested in the future of our community.”

Premier Wynne is the first party leader to visit the city this election campaign and may be the only leader to do so.

Previously, Wynne hosted a cabinet meeting in Sault Ste. Marie as part of the government’s focus on the interests of Northern communities.

“It’s great to have Premier Wynne back in the Sault as part of her scheduled Northern tour to meet with local residents and to announce the Liberal education plan, which includes a new investment of  $150 million in the latest technology for students and teachers,” said Orazietti.

”It’s laughable that the local NDP would criticize the Premier’s visit to the Sault when their own leader skipped town altogether, requiring the local candidate to travel to Sudbury for a meeting.”

The Liberals have a strong plan to create new jobs, improve our infrastructure, and build on the gains we have made in health care and education.

The Liberal Plan is built on the priorities laid out in the 2014 Budget and includes a number of significant investments in Northern Ontario including:

• Committing $1 billion for the development of all-season infrastructure in the Ring of Fire, which will support generations of jobs and economic growth in Northern Ontario
• Protecting the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), which has helped to strengthen Sault Ste. Marie’s economy with $87 million to support 728 projects
• Extending the Northern Industrial Electricity Rate Program (NIERP) to support Sault Ste. Marie employers such as Essar Steel Algoma, Tenaris Tubes and Flakeboard Company Ltd.
• Supporting a strong and continued head office for OLG in Sault Ste. Marie

By contrast, the NDP platform fails to allocate any funding to support development in the Ring of Fire, and makes no commitment to continuing the NOHFC or maintaining OLG jobs.
