NEWS RELEASE

ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE

*************************
At approximately 9:35 a.m. on July 8, 2014, Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Laird Township.

A car traveling westbound with three occupants left the roadway and rolled over into the ditch.

A female passenger was transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

As a result of police investigation, 20-year-old Marie Derochers of Longueuil, Quebec was charged with Careless Driving under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

While emergency personnel were at the scene of the single motor vehicle rollover a second collision occurred.

Traffic had been opened to one westbound lane and was moving past the scene.

A westbound pick up truck approached the area at a high rate of speed, and collided with the rear end of a westbound vehicle traveling in front of it.

66-year-old Keith Croft of Blind River, Ontario was charged with Careless Driving contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

In Ontario, Section 159 (2)(3) of the Highway Traffic Act requires drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated.

OPP urges motorists to obey Move Over laws to ensure the safety of all emergency personnel.

Their own lives will be endangered by drivers who do not obey Move Over Legislation.

Original story

Emergency officials were still on the scene of a single-vehicle rollover Tuesday morning when a rear-end accident occurred on Highway 17 on Laird Hill.

Ontario Provincial Police say the first vehicle was heading west when it rolled, leaving a passenger with what were described as minor injuries.

While police were investigating that crash, a westbound pickup truck ran into another stationary pickup, said OPP.

No one was injured in the second crash.

Both collisions were under investigation as of Tuesday afternoon.
