Sault Area Hospital (SAH) confirmed today that one COVID-19 positive patient from the Greater Toronto Area will be admitted this week.

SAH said in a press release that more COVID-19 patients are expected to be admitted to the hospital.

The hospital is preparing to receive one to two patients a day, depending on critical care capacity in our hospital. The release states that patients transferred to the local hospital could be patients with COVID-19 or without COVID-19.

This comes as health centres and hospitals across the province continue to plan for a surge of COVID-19 patients.

Yesterday, Health Sciences North confirmed that one seriously ill Southern Ontario COVID-19 patient is being transferred to Sudbury, and that more COVID-19 patients are expected. It is possible Sudbury patients who are not seriously sick may be sent to other hospitals across the north for the time being.

"At this stage, we have received a request to accept one COVID patient from the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). That patient has not been transferred yet (3 p.m. Monday). And the Sault area hospital has also been asked to admit a COVID patient in critical care from central Ontario," Dominic Giroux, the president and CEO of HSN said, saying he expects a number of similar requests to happen in the coming days.

While many southern Ontario hospitals are ramping down elective surgeries and non-urgent procedures to ensure critical care capacity amid a surge of COVID-19 cases, to date, SAH has continued to provide all elective surgeries and non-urgent procedures.

As of 1:45 p.m. today, there are 41 active COVID-19 cases in the Algoma region, and one positive case in a non-Algoma resident temporarily in the region. Two patients are currently hospitalized with the virus. To date, the Algoma region has reported four COVID-related deaths.

According to data on howsmyflattening.ca, 55.6 per cent of ICU beds in APH's jurisdiction are occupied.
