COVID cases, hospitalizations, deaths plateau in Ontario

COVID-19 case counts, hospitalizations and deaths have levelled out in Ontario, showing a plateau rather than any significant increase or decrease in numbers over the past two weeks.

The June 10, 2022 report noted 835 new COVID cases, which is about even with 888 new cases reported one week ago on June 3, and down from 1,089 new cases reported a month ago on May 10. Testing is still limited, so the number of new cases is expected to be underestimated.

There were 12,003 new cases confirmed in Ontario between May 9 and 15, and 5,319 cases confirmed between May 29 and June 4.

The number of severe cases resulting in hospitalization and deaths is also down with between two and 12 deaths per day during the week of May 20-27, compared to eight to 13 deaths per day between May 11 and 18.

The number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 has decreased over the last 30 days from about 59 new hospitalizations on May 9, to fewer than 25 per day over the last two weeks.

There are currently 110 patients in Ontario ICUs because of COVID-related critical illness, including 52 patients on ventilators. There are 536 people hospitalized in the province with COVID-19, and of those, 42 per cent were admitted because of COVID, and the remaining patients were admitted for other reasons but test positive for COVID-19.

Since March 2020, 1,311,360 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Ontario. Of those cases, 13,312 have ended in death, and 1,289,514 cases are considered resolved. Deaths are reported only where COVID was the cause, or contributed to, the death.

In the province's long-term care homes, 32,219 residents have tested positive, and 4,578 of them died after contracting COVID-19.

This week, Algoma Public Health has moved to reporting seven-day rolling totals of new confirmed COVID cases twice weekly with the most recent data current on June 9. It indicates there were 34 new confirmed cases over the week previous to June 9.

COVID caused or contributed to the death of one more person over the past week in Algoma, bringing the total to 58 who have died since the pandemic began in this area about 27 months ago.
