Ward 6 Councillor Peter Vaudry announced this morning that he requires triple bypass surgery and will return to his City Council duties after he recovers.
Vaudry was taken to hospital late last week from his workplace, Algoma Steel, after experiencing angina there.
His surgery is to be done in Ottawa.
Vaudry also announced his retirement from Algoma Steel Inc.
The councillor issued the following news release at 10:16 a.m. today through the City Clerk's office:
***************************************************************** (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) Peter Vaudry, Ward 6 Councillor, wishes to thank the hundreds of people who have contacted him over the past several days to express concern and to offer best wishes for his speedy recovery.
Councillor Vaudry suffered an angina attack late last week while working at Algoma Steel Inc. and was taken to the hospital.
Following an assessment, he was released shortly thereafter.
It has been determined that Councillor Vaudry will require triple by-pass surgery and arrangements are currently being made for this procedure to be done in Ottawa.
Councillor Vaudry is resting comfortably at home in the interim and is appreciative of all the support that he has received from family, friends, and constituents, as well as the tremendous nursing care.
Originally scheduled to retire from ASI at the end of 2002, Councillor Vaudry was asked to stay on for the first four months of 2003 by his employer.
He therefore will be retiring as originally arranged this month.
It is expected that Councillor Vaudry will return to his full duties as a City Councillor following his recovery from surgery.
