Community Builders Awards: Susan Barber’s legacy lives on

Susan passed away in August 2016, but her 30 years of work in the local arts community has left a lasting and positive impact on Sault Ste. Marie

Susan Barber’s leadership in arts and education, as well as her dedication and advocacy to live theatre, continue to positively impact the Sault Ste. Marie community after her passing in 2016.

Among her many achievements in the local arts community, Susan transformed the arts program at Algoma District School Board, allowing for students who take drama courses after school to receive credits for it. This made theatre accessible to students who couldn’t otherwise fit the program into their daily schedule of classes.

Susan was known for making students feel comfortable and welcome so that they could shine on stage. This helped many students to find their place within the school community, in an atmosphere that welcomed them with open arms.

Her dedication extended well beyond the arts and education sectors, as she often donated proceeds to shows she staged to local groups working to address social issues surrounding mental health stigma, homophobia and anti-Semitism.

The Legacy Award honours an individual posthumously who has created lasting change and measurable difference in our community through commitment and perseverance. This award pays tribute to the individual’s leadership, vision and ongoing legacy.

Thank you to the friends and family of Susan Barber who put together a nomination package in her honour.

This award is proudly sponsored by Northwood Funeral Home.
